Sentinel Surveillance |
HIV sentinel surveillance means carrying out cross sectional study of HIV sero prevalence rates at regular interval among selected groups in the population known as "sentinel groups". |
Annual HSS was started in 1998 and is being conducted regularly every year, with the objective
- To provide understanding of the spread of HIV infection.
- To determine geographical distribution and time trend of infection.
- To provide a basis for prioritization of resources.
- Validation of data from other sources.
- Evaluation of the national response to various programmes.

- Jalor & Dungarpur Districts in Rajasthan have come up near as Category A district in 2008 round showing HIV positivity of 1% & 0.94% respectively
- Chittorgarh, Jaipur and Sikar has shown prevalence of around 5% while Ajmer has shown 8.8% positivity in STD group.
- Dungarpur, Jalor, Sikar & Rajsamand emerging as hot spot.
- Except of Ajmer & Jaipur remaining districts of category A & B are showing prevalence of less than 1% in ANC and less than 5% in STD cases .
- Category A district Ganganagar FSW site is showing 0 positivity in FSW , while Category B districts Ajmer& Alwar have shown 7.2% positivity.
- Rajasthan was able to keep the prevalence less than one percent in the general population keeping there by in the low prevalence category
- . With the prevalence in & around 5% in high risk sites the spillage in general population appeared to be eminent but contrary to the expectation no statistically significant change was observed in the prevalence of ANC sites.
- Even the scaling of the SS ANC sites could bring out significant change in the HIV prevalence in general population showing fairly well controlled epidemic in state.
- On 90 % CI there is definite decline in the mean prevalence of HIV among the STD group.

| STD Trends |
| Decline in HIV positivity is observed in STD sites after 2005. A study fall in VDRL positivity rate in Blood bank samples since 2004 & decline in HIV positivity in VCTC attendees in year 2007 are corroborative findings. |
